HOW A SPRING ACTUALLY FAILS
A spring is rated in cycles, not years — and it fails all at once.
Most torsion springs are wound for about ten thousand open-and-close cycles. Nothing warns you at nine thousand. Here is what the end of one looks like, and what we replace when we get there.
A bang like a gunshot, then a two-inch gap in the coil
Look up at the bar above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a clean gap where the coil separated, and the door is now two hundred pounds with nothing holding it. If the opener still runs, stop using it — you are dragging that weight through the gearbox. If the spring failure has caused additional damage to the door, we can handle the garage door repair at the same time.
One spring broke. We replace both.
Paired springs wind and wear together, so the second one is days or weeks behind the first. Replacing one means a second service call, a second trip charge, and a door running out of balance in between. We quote the pair because that is the honest job.

Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door; extension springs run alongside the tracks on older Utah homes and need containment cables to be safe. We match the spring to your door weight and cycle count rather than fitting whatever is on the truck, and we check the lift cables and drums at the same time, because a frayed cable will take out the new spring you just paid for. Wire size, inside diameter and length are measured off your door, and we fit high-cycle springs where the door earns them. A builder-grade spring rated for ten thousand cycles on a door that runs six times a day is a repair with an expiry date on it.
We change the pair, check the cables and drums while the tension is off, and reset the opener force afterwards — the parts either side of a spring are what usually kill the next one. How much does spring replacement cost?
What drives it: torsion or extension, single or pair, standard or high-cycle, and whether the cables and drums took damage when it let go. You get the number before we start.
Do I need to replace both springs?
On a two-spring door, yes. They have identical cycle counts, so the second one is weeks or months from the same failure. Doing the pair once costs less than two visits and keeps the door balanced.
How long does it take?
About an hour to ninety minutes for a standard door, including the balance and cycle testing. If the cables jumped the drums or the door came off track when it failed, longer — and we will say so before starting.
How long should new springs last?
A builder-grade spring is commonly rated near 10,000 cycles; high-cycle springs run several times that. At four openings a day, that is the difference between roughly seven years and a couple of decades.
Can I open my door manually with a broken spring?
You should not. The spring is what counterbalances the weight, so without it the door is a two-hundred-pound panel with nothing holding it up. Leave it where it is, keep people and cars clear, and call.
Why did it break in winter?
Because it was already near the end of its cycle life and the cold made the door harder to move. Cold picks the day; the cycle count sets the year.
